Equality between women and men, CATHII pronounce

The CATHII submitted a comment to the Committee on Relations with citizens about Draft second Government Action Plan for Equality between women and men. This comment specifically addresses the issue 5 of Workbook and addresses issues affecting Trafficking in women, the main ones include:

CATHII members welcome the inclusion of trafficking of women in government thinking. However, trafficking of women is more complex. There are issues relating to forced labor. Evidenced by the growing number of homemakers and farm workers living in situations of abuse and exploitation in the province.

In addition, the Workbook omits the situation of indigenous women according to several experts who are the main victims of trafficking human in Canada. Quebec is no exception to this sad reality.

The consultation gives importance to the establishment of support measures for those who want to leave prostitution. The CATHII said these measures must be part of a comprehensive, concerted and multi-sectoral accords a central place for community organizations and recognizes their expertise.

More specifically, the plan of action could follow the Swedish model, who has put in place a set of measures and resources needed to support women wishing to leave prostitution.

Finally, the report of the Subcommittee on Trafficking of migrant women offered few avenues for migrant women victims of trafficking. We believe that the Quebec government should do more to protect migrant women victims of trafficking in particular as regards access to health services, education and labor market.
